Description:

The WPA built a rock grotto for this spring after its discovery in 1938 to make it appear classically Roman. The spring was capped with a pump handle and labeled as the "Fountain of Youth" with an inscribed stone disk. Everyone enjoyed the spring water until May 11, 1955 when the spring was declared contaminated by "coliform organisms" (i.e., bodily fecal waste) with no explanation given. The Fountain of Youth has remained closed to the public ever since. In 2005, the rock work around the Spring entrance was repaired as was the Fountain of Youth disk in 2009. The pump handle, however, has not been restored.
