Description:

This monument honors the home-grown comic hero in Luzerne County. The Palooka character from the comics in the '40s and '50s was a heavyweight boxer and war hero. This granite monument along Route 309 in Hanover Township honors Ham Fisher who created the Joe Palooka comic strip published until 1984. Artist Ham Fischer was born and raised in nearby Wilkes-Barre. When someone stole the original plaque, a new plaque was placed on the Joe Palooka Monument along Route 309. The plaque details the history of the comic strip and its creator. Businessman Max Bartikowski donated the plaque because of what the monument and its history mean to the area. Directions: I-81 exit 165A (northbound) or 165 (southbound). East of the interstate around a mile on Hwy 309. On the westbound side of Hwy 309, just west of Pine Run Rd.
