Description:
Pennsylvania's oldest continuously operated coal mine opened in 1855 and closed in 1972. The No. 9 Coal Mine, an anthracite coal mine, again reopened in 2002, but this time as a tourist attraction. Now you can ride safely by train down the mountainside and descend 1,600 feet to experience what it was like for our relatives to work underground over a 200 year span. Inside the mine, tour guides will lead you on a walking tour to see the underground mule-way; miner’s hospital, and the 900-foot deep original elevator shaft that hauled coal cars to the surface. The No. 9 Mining Museum, filled with original equipment and artifacts covering nearly two centuries of mining history, is open all year round. There is a gift shop on premises and plenty of picnic and parking areas.
