Description:

Pioneer Tunnel ceased operations in 1931. It was re-timbered and reopened as an attraction where visitors experience a real anthracite coal mine. You are shown how a vein of coal lies between rock and strata. The guide will take visitors into the mine via mine cars that have been retooled to carry passengers. When deep into the tunnel, passengers leave the cars and follow their guide who will give them an explanation of deep-mining methods. Another featured attraction at the mine is a narrow gauge steam train ride aboard the Lokie Henry Clay tank engine that hauled coal years ago.
