The Kinzua Viaduct was the longest and highest viaduct in the world when first constructed in 1882. The viaduct measured 301 feet high and 2,053 feet long. The need to transport coal, oil, and lumber across the Kinzua Gorge was the inspiration for the Erie Railroad to design this colossal viaduct.
