Description:
The Lighthouse at Turtle Rock was constructed in 1887 by Frank Thurwanger on a rocky protrusion along the east bank of the Schuylkill River, costing under $3,000. It marked a river bend near a 1,200-foot dam built in 1820, aiding navigation and creating calm waters beneficial for the local boathouses. In 1902, the lighthouse was deeded to the Sedgeley Club and became part of their boathouse, with its entrance accessible only from the outside. Featuring arched windows and an octagonal walkway around the lantern room, the lighthouse was originally lit by a gas lantern, later converted to electricity. A major restoration led by the Sedgeley Club took place in 1987, ensuring the lighthouse remains illuminated alongside Boathouse Row.
