Description:

Built in 1772 for the colony of Rhode Island, this jail was enlarged in 1880 and continued to be used as a jail until 1888. It was never particularly effective; prisoners could escape quite easily. Ironically, it was used as a police station until 1986 and then soon thereafter became the Jailhouse Inn. Of course, it has no hint of what it started out as - guests will stay in comfort with all the modern conveniences and cushy furnishings available. Nearby attractions include Isaac Bell House, Cliff Walk 40 Steps, and Bannister's Wharf.
