Description:

Built in the early 1700s, Tavern on Main began as a colonial dwelling featuring a stone foundation and central fireplace, with hand-hewn chestnut and oak beams. It played a pivotal role in Rhode Island's history when, in 1842, Thomas Dorr convened the General Assembly there during a political crisis against Governor Samuel King. Following Dorr's withdrawal, King's troops occupied the tavern, consuming significant amounts of food and drink without paying, much to tavernkeeper Jedediah Sprague's dismay. Over the years, the tavern has transformed from an apartment building and billiard parlor to a pub and restaurant, yet it remains a cherished community establishment known for its hospitality.
