This surviving canal was built in 1824 is now used to provide hydroelectric power. The labor of indentured Irishmen was used which provided a direct water route on the Fall Line escarpment. It's the second oldest continuously operating alternating current generating plant in the world. (Submitted by Allen Von Plinsky)
