Description:

Fort Howell, located in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is a historic earthen fort built in 1864 during the Civil War. Constructed by the Union Army’s 32nd United States Colored Infantry and the 144th New York Infantry, the fort was designed to protect the freedmen’s village of Mitchelville, one of the first self-governed communities of formerly enslaved people. Today, Fort Howell stands as a preserved historical site, offering visitors a glimpse into its unique past through informational signage and the remains of its earthworks.
