Situated on the Catawba River this park is home to world's largest population of rocky shoal spider lilies. These white, spindly flowers are endangered, although they haven't been officially listed as such. Dam construction and human interference have almost wiped out the species. On the South Carolina fall line are the remains of a canal system which made the river navigable from 1820 to 1835.

The dam used to keep a sufficient water supply when canal river ran low. The dam didn’t go all the way across the river.
