The first European settlement near to present-day Columbia was home to German, Swiss, and Scots-Irish immigrants who owned small farms. It prospered until the 1800s arrived, but was overshadowed by the growth of Columbia. Due to an ongoing archaeological project, over 15,000 artifacts have been unearthed dating back to the 1700s.
