The Powder Magazine, completed in 1713, holds the distinction of being South Carolina's oldest government building. Originally serving as a gunpowder storage facility until 1748 and playing a vital role during the American Revolution, it later transitioned to private ownership and was repurposed as a print shop, livery stable, wine cellar, and carriage house. Fortunately, in 1902, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in South Carolina stepped in to purchase the historic building, thus preventing its demolition.
