Description:

The Mount Moriah Cemetery in Deadwood, South Dakota is the burial place of Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Sol Star, Seth Bullock, and other notable Wild West figures. Traditionally, the American flag flies over the cemetery 24 hours a day and is not raised at sunrise and taken down at sunset. Other sections in the cemetery are labeled Potter's field - there graves of unknown people or settlers that came from other areas were buried without a stone or marker. There's also a Jewish section of the graveyard where many of the inscriptions are written in Hebrew. (Seth Bullock's partner, Sol Star, was a member of this early Jewish community.) There's also a section labelled as a Mass Grave site where a fire burned a lumber mill and killed 11 men. Another section is labelled for the children who died from typhus, cholera, and smallpox outbreaks. Only two Chinese graves remain in the cemetery (as all other Chinese people buried there were disinterred and sent back to China for reburial). Many Civil War and Indian War veterans are also buried here with government supplied gravestones at their family's request.
