Description:

The Airplane Service Station, located in Powell, Tennessee, is an iconic piece of roadside architecture. Built in 1930 by brothers Elmer and Henry Nickle, the station was designed to resemble an airplane, capitalizing on the public's fascination with aviation during that era. Initially intended as both a gas station and a garage, the structure reflects the whimsical, novelty design trend that was popular in early 20th-century America. Although it no longer operates as a service station, the building remains a local landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
