Description:

Fort Negley, located in Nashville, Tennessee, is a significant historic site built during the Civil War. Constructed by Union forces in 1862, it is the largest inland stone fortification built during the war. Designed to protect the city from Confederate attack, the fort was primarily constructed using the labor of formerly enslaved African Americans and conscripted freedmen. After the war, Fort Negley fell into disrepair but was partially restored in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Today, the fort stands as a testament to the region's complex history, offering visitors insights into Civil War military engineering and the experiences of African Americans during the war.
