Description:

This Greek Revival building with its portico was finished in 1859. As it was built in the Antebellum period, slave labor, along with convict and hired labor, was used. Two Tennessee-born presidents are memorialized here with statues - Andrew Jackson and Andrew Johnson. The third president from Tennessee, James Polk, is interred on the capitol grounds along with his wife. The graceful building was constructed inside and out from limestone taken from a nearby quarry.
