Description:

The Tennessee Land Grant Program allowed Revolutionary War veteran William "Fighting Billy" Tipton to purchase this homestead. By the late 1800s Fighting Billy had a two-story cabin, a corn crib, bee gums, a smokehouse, and a blacksmith shop in addition to the barn. Called a "cantilever barn," this type of structure is noted for the overhanging second story - a design with roots in Sweden and Germany. This replica barn along with the John P Cable Drive Thru Barn are the best examples in the U.S. of cantilevered barn styles.
