The 32-foot-high figures are erecting a 78-foot-tall steel flagpole from which a cloth flag flies 24 hours a day. They occupy the same positions as in Rosenthal's historic photograph. (Submitted by Anthony Von Plinsky)

Harlon H. Block was one of the Marines who raised the flag at Iwo Jima and is buried here on the grounds. He died 5 days after the flag was raised.
