Description:
San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio was founded in 1731 by Canary Island settlers under a decree from the Spanish Crown and its cornerstone was laid in the late 1730s, making it one of the oldest church buildings in Texas and the oldest continuously functioning religious community in the state. Over the centuries it has been expanded and remodeled, including a major 19th-century renovation in a Gothic Revival style and its designation as the seat of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The cathedral has stood at the heart of the city’s spiritual and civic life through historic events such as the Texas Revolution and remains a central landmark in downtown San Antonio
