Description:
The former seat of Reagan County was founded in 1894 and prospered for a couple of decades before going into a fast decline after 1925. A dispute between Stiles and the Mexico & Orient Railroad forced the latter to move their operations 20 miles away to Big Lake. Without traffic coming through town Stiles withered away while Big Lake prospered. The Stiles Courthouse has withstood time and the elements better than other structures have. There is also a cemetery full of decedents who passed from snakebites, war wounds, and dysentery.
