Robert Smithson coined the term "earthwork" to describe art that is created using only raw, natural materials such as stones, soil, and branches. In 1970, he created Spiral Jetty out of mud, salt crystals, and basalt. This amazing silvery spiral seems to jettison out into the atmosphere. It is one of his last works before his death in 1973.
