Description:
Real-life folk hero Daniel Boone was best known for pioneering and taking part in the westward expansion of the U.S. Born in 1734, Boone started exploring for new places to settle in the 1760s. The Wytheville memorial was erected in 1928, but rebuilt in 2005. At one point there were 358 markers on the trail from Virginia to California, but road expansion and highway rerouting meant that many of the markers went missing.
