These towering spires are remnants of when the Shenandoah Valley was once covered in a gigantic, deep sea millions of years ago. As the seas receded, the destructive water shaped these layered limestone formations which stand 65 to 120 feet tall. There is a fence that cordons them off forbidding visitors from further destroying the soft stone.
