Built in the midst of the Civil War in 1863, the site of this fort was inhabited by humans long before. It has also become an archaeological site where old artifacts and information about ancient peoples have been unearthed. After the Civil War, the fort became a place to deposit people with contagious illnesses. It now serves as a place of respite with a playground, pavilions, and a manmade lookout that offers a panoramic view of Parkersburg.
