Mount Wood Castle and Cemetery

This ruin was the beginning of a doctor's dream home but he was hauled off to prison well-before it was finished. Next to the "air castle" is an old cemetery with graves dating back to the 1700s when the first European settlers arrived here. The city of Wheeling allowed both the castle and cemetery to deteriorate but in recent years have begun to rethink their value. With an excellent vantage point of the valley below the naturally beautiful surroundings could be harnessed for a grander purpose. (Photo by Madelaine Cristillo)
