Deke Slayton Memorial Space and Bike Museum

Named after one of America's first astronauts, this museum pays homage to the modes of transport that are on opposite ends of the time spectrum - the bicycle and space travel. While Amsterdam may be the bike capital of the world, Sparta is the bike capital of America - due to its status as the first to implement the Rails to Trails program in the nation. So how is biking associated with space travel? Deke Slayton was born in Sparta and the little town wanted to recognize both of its contributions to America.
