In the early 1900s, Fred Smith started his concrete sculpture park with the Rock Garden Tavern that he built and managed after his retirement. He first built a leaping deer then for the next 15 years would grow his concrete population exponentially. Using discarded glass bottles set into the concrete, this illiterate artist built a variety of two-legged and four-legged creatures until his health took a turn for the worse in the 1960s.
