Description:

Black Sand Basin (named black sand for the crushed volcanic glass) is located in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming and features a grouping of geothermal hot springs and geysers. These springs are way too hot for mineral bath use because the waters are a scalding 200 °F (93 °C). In winter there's a marked ski trail running from the Old Faithful Visitor Center to Black Sand Basin. Black Sand Basin Trail is a short 0.5-mile heavily trafficked out-and-back route. This trail suits all skill levels for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching usually from May until September. This area is a very interesting geyser basin which is well worth the stop. The colors are unbelievable.
