Description:
Named for the leather-like brown bacteria that accumulates on the pool's surface, this hot spring usually stays at 62 degrees Celsius (143 degrees Fahrenheit). A 1959 earthquake briefly raised the spring to the boiling point, killing the bacteria. The brown microorganisms have thrived in the decades since, returning the pool to its former "leather" state.
